The worst of the gougables hawked by the wedding industry. Seriously, there's nothing so godawful out there that they won't slap a couple of doves on it and shove it up on The Knot.
It's funny, as I was reading the article I was thinking how very Elvisesque the wailing and gnashing of teeth was...and then about two paragraphs down, there was the obligatory Elvis reference.
On the other hand, I do think Diana did some real good in the world with two public stances: support for victims of AIDS, and efforts to eradicate the evils of land mines. Whatever else she did or failed to do, I will always admire her for her efforts in those two matters.
Sadly, the real good things she did in life have been eclipsed in the public record by her marriage, her clothes, and hysterical conspiracy theories concerning her death.
As for the rest, well, I got up one pre-dawn to watch her wedding, and another to watch her funeral. Bookends in a life.
How much impact her short life truly had on the world is for history to decide. All I know is that I cried like a baby when I saw the flowers from Prince Harry with the simple legend 'Mummy.'
And I did laugh that day at a stray memory from Diana's wedding. At the time I had a regular babysitting job watching a wonderful little boy. He told me he'd watched the wedding with his mother. When I asked him what he thought of it, he mused for a moment, then said 'the dress was pretty, but when the cameras were way up at the ceiling, she looked like a big, white slug.'
My mother is obsessed with how beautiful, nurturing and tragic Princess Di was, and she's American! I never even though she was pretty, let alone important.
